July 31, 2026, a dated addition. The piece's frame excluded Apple because the chart's frame did: hyperscaler is a word Apple has not applied to itself. Apple filed its 10-Q this morning (accession 0000320193-26-000020; the earnings release is 0000320193-26-000018), so the excluded row can now be built the same way the six were. In the column the chart labeled "officially reported debt," which was total liabilities, Apple stands at $275.7 billion, down from $285.5 billion in September, the only balance sheet in this group that shrank this year. In the column the chart labeled "hidden," the off-balance-sheet stack: $57.0 billion of manufacturing purchase obligations, $56.2 billion of it due within a year, plus $29.3 billion of other purchase obligations, $86.3 billion combined. Count the commitments note's $27.6 billion again on top, which the filing's own descriptions say would double count, and the ceiling is $113.9 billion. Either construction is the shortest bar on the chart, from the most valuable public company in the world, and its nine months of capital expenditures ran $6.8 billion, down 28 percent. The largest technology companies do not all carry more off the balance sheet than on it. One of them carries less than half as much off as on, and both numbers are shrinking. The frame was always the finding.

Dated update, July 30, as promised in the Notes. Meta's Q2 10-Q was accepted yesterday evening and disseminated this morning, accession 0001628280-26-050705. The two figures this piece carried at their Q1 vintage restate as follows. Non-cancelable contractual commitments: $349.31 billion, from $238 billion. Leases signed but not yet commenced: $278.99 billion, from $183 billion. The chart's 421.0 for Meta, rebuilt on the chart's own construction, is now $628.3 billion, up 49 percent in one quarter. The filing adds that approximately $68 billion of additional data center leases were signed in July, after the quarter closed, commencing 2027 and 2028 on terms of 18 to 20 years. The venture figures refresh to $46.03 billion of maximum exposure against $2.92 billion carried. Two disclosures new to the record: $10.80 billion of money market funds now sit in escrow under multi-year infrastructure purchase agreements, restricted until released between 2028 and 2030 as the purchase obligations are satisfied; and Meta discloses contingent obligations to purchase up to $14.72 billion of cloud capacity over five years, reducible if the provider sells that capacity to other customers. Every figure above is in Note 6, Note 9, and the VIE disclosure of the filing, period June 30, 2026. The record updates on a clock. This is the clock.
